Question:To, Grand Ayatollah Sistani (may Allah grant him long life):
Salamun alaikum warahmatullah wa barakatuh
We are a number of pilgrims setting out to Karbala to attend the Arbaeen and pay tribute to Imam Hussein, peace be upon him. In order for us to benefit from this spiritual journey and earn the reward of visiting the tomb of the Chief of Martyrs as well as to know what we do not know, we are in need of your fatherly advice which we hope to spread across all segments of the community. May Allah grant you long life. We earnestly call on you to furnish us with your advice and pray for us.

A group of Momeneen

Answer by Grand Ayatollah Sistani (may Allah grant him long life):

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate the Merciful

Praise belongs to Allah and peace and benedictions of Allah be upon our master, Muhammad and his pure progeny.
It is befitting for momeneen (believers) whom Allah has granted success to perform pilgrimage, to note that Allah, the Exalted, selected prophets and their noble successors from amongst His servants to be divine proofs and authority over people and that whose teachings people should follow to be guided aright. Allah has encouraged people to visit the sacred sites so that those infallible leaders are continuously remembered and held in reverence. Since those nobles are the best examples of servitude to Allah, the Glorified and jihad in His way and sacrifice for the cause of His everlasting religion, visiting their shrines, commemorating them and narrating their stories will remind the memeneen of Allah, the Exalted, His doctrines and injunctions.
Hence, it is one of the essentials of this pilgrimage that the pilgrim, in addition to remembering Imam Hussein’s sacrifices and devotion in the way of Allah, the Exalted, observes the teachings of Islam including those relating to prayer, hijab, self-reform, selflessness and moral etiquette etc. so that his pilgrimage may be a step towards developing and training the soul for accepting these and consolidating their effects until the next pilgrimage. It is only by so doing that attending these ceremonies will be practically the same as attending the lessons of the Imam, peace be upon him.
In fact, we have not been in the time of the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) to learn from them directly and be educated by them, but Allah, the Exalted, has preserved their conducts for us and has persuaded us to visit them as our role models. As the contemporaries of the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) lived with them and were put to test, Allah also wants to test us as to how far we are sincere in our desire to live with them and follow their teachings. Hence, we must be careful lest we should not falsely desire to see them. We must know that if we act as per their advice, it is hoped that we shall be resurrected along with their friends. Because it has been reported that Imam Ali (A.S) said in the Battle of Jamal:
“Today we are accompanied by those who are still in the loins of their fathers and uteruses of their mothers.”
Therefore, it is not difficult for each of us who cherishes the hope to act according to the teachings of the Ahlul-Bayt and obey them to be educated in accord with their educational methods and benefit from their manners.
Fear Allah in relation to your prayers. As stated in the hadith, it is the pillar of your religion and the ascension of the believer, if it is accepted, all other acts will be accepted and if it is rejected, all other acts of worship will also be rejected.
It is befitting for believers to offer their prayers on time because Allah loves those who rush to prayer as soon as they hear the call for it. It is not appropriate for a believer to engage in any other acts of worship in the prime for prayer because prayer is the best form of obedience to Allah. It is has been narrated from the Ahlul-Bayt, peace be upon them, that they said:
“Our intercession (with Allah) will not be won or attained by that person who depreciates or undervalues the prayer”.
About Imam Hussein’s special attention to prayer on the Day of Ashura, it has been reported that he told his companion who reminded him of the prime time for the prayer:
“You reminded me of prayer, may Allah include you amongst those who are conscious of (their duty to) prayer.”
Then and there he established prayer under a rain of arrows.
Fear Allah in sincerity inasmuch as the value and barakah of one’s deeds depends on how far he is sincere in performing them for Allah’s sake. Because Allah will not accept any deeds which are not purely for Him. It has been narrated from the Holy Prophet (S) that he said during Muslims’ emigration from Mecca to Medina: “Whoever migrates for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, he has migrated to Him and whoever migrates to make worldly gains, he has migrated to the world. Allah will reward sincere deeds to the extent that it will increase to seven hundred folds and He doubles the rewards for whomsoever He wants.”
Hence, it is necessary on the pilgrims to remember Allah and recite zikr of Allah and be mindful of every step and every deed to be for Allah’s sake. They should know that Allah has not bestowed anyone with a blessing so precious as sincerity in belief, sayings and conducts. An act which is devoid of sincerity ends with the end of life in this world whereas a since act will be lasting and blessed in this world and the hereafter.
Fear Allah in observing modest clothing which is amongst the most important thing that the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) heeded to even in the most difficult circumstances and they were the best role models in terms of observing modest clothing. Imam Hussein (A.S) was not hurt as much as he was hurt by the enemy due to violation of his dignity and respect. It is, therefore, necessary for all pilgrims especially ladies to observe modesty in their conducts, clothing and appearance and to avoid whatever is deemed a violation of this e.g. wearing close-fitting clothes, mixing up in an abominable way with members of the opposite gender and wearing inadmissible jewelry. In fact, it is befitting for believers that in order for them to keep the sacred ceremony untainted, they have to, as far as possible, adhere to the highest levels of modesty.
We pray to Almighty Allah to elevate the position of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his descendants, and his pure family (A.S), due to the sacrifices they made in the way of Allah and their efforts to guide His creatures. May He increase salawat (greeting) and blessings on them as He has sent greetings to previous prophets especially Ibrahim and his family.
We also pray to Allah to bestow barakah upon the pilgrimage of the pilgrims of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him and accept it in the best way as He accepts the deeds of His noble servants so that they may, through their lifestyle and deeds in this pilgrimage, be a role model for others for the rest of their lives and be rewarded for their love of and obedience to the household of the Prophet (A.S) and for preaching his mission.
Let’s hope that on the Day of Judgment when everyone of the people are called with his Imam, they (pilgrims) are called with the Ahlul-Bayt (A.S) and that those who are martyred in this way, they are, due to their sacrifices and the sufferings which they have gone through, resurrected with Hussein, peace be upon him and his friends. Verily, He is all Hearing, Ever Responsive.

The Farewell Pilgrimage
Ten years after the migration (hijrah), the Messenger of Allah [peace and blessings be upon him and his Progeny] ordered to his close followers to call all the people in different places to join him in his last pilgrimage. On this pilgrimage he taught them how to perform the pilgrimage in a correct and unified form.

This was first time that the Muslims with this magnitude gathered in one place in the presence of their leader, the Messenger of Allah [s]. On his way to Makkah, more than seventy thousand people followed Prophet [s]. On the fourth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah more than one hundred thousand Muslims had entered Makkah.

Date

The date of this event was the 18th of Dhu’l-Hijjah of the year 10 AH (10 March 632 CE).

Location

After completing his last pilgrimage (Hajjatul-Wada’), Prophet [s] was leaving Makkah toward Madinah, where he and the crowd of people reached a place called Ghadir Khumm (which is close to today’s al-Juhfah).  It was a place where people from different provinces used to greet each other before taking different routes for their homes.

Revelation of Qur’anic Verse 5:67
In this place, the following verse of the Qur’an was revealed:

“O Apostle! Deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord; and if you don’t do it, you have not delivered His message (at all); and Allah will protect you from the people …” (Qur’an 5:67)

The last sentence in the above verse indicates that the Prophet [s] was mindful of the reaction of his people in delivering that message but Allah informs him not to worry, for He will protect His Messenger from people.

The Sermon
Upon receiving the verse, the Prophet [s] stopped on that place (the pond of Khumm) which was extremely hot. Then he sent for all people who have been ahead in the way, to come back and waited until all pilgrims who fell behind, arrived and gathered. He ordered Salman [r] to use rocks and camel toolings to make a pulpit (minbar) so he could make his announcement. It was around noon time in the first of the Fall, and due to the extreme heat in that valley, people were wrapping their robes around their feet and legs, and were sitting around the pulpit, on the hot rocks.

On this day the Messenger of Allah [s] spent approximately five hours in this place; three hours of which he was on the pulpit. He recited nearly one hundred verses from The Glorious Quran, and for seventy three times reminded and warned people of their deeds and future. Then he gave them a long speech.

The following is a part of his speech which has been widely narrated by the Sunni traditionists:

Tradition of the Two Weighty Things (thaqalayn)

The Messenger of Allah [s] declared:

“It seems the time approached when I shall be called away (by Allah) and I shall answer that call. I am leaving for you two precious things and if you adhere to them both,  you will never go astray after me. They are the Book of Allah and my Progeny, that is my Ahlul Bayt. The two shall never separate from each other until they come to me by the Pool (of Paradise).”

[See also: Hadith al-Thaqalayn: A Study of its tawatur]

Acknowledgement of Authority

Then the Messenger of Allah continued:

“Do I not have more right over the believers than what they have over themselves?”

People cried and answered:

“Yes, O’ Messenger of God.”

Text (nass) of the DesignationThen followed the key sentence denoting the clear designation of ‘Ali as the leader of the Muslim ummah.  The Prophet [s] held up the hand of ‘Ali and said:
“For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), ‘Ali is his Leader (mawla).”
The Prophet [s] continued:
“O’ God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him.”
These were the key parts of the speech of the Prophet [s]. There are also more detailed versions of this sermon which are recorded by many Sunni authorities.

‘Coronation’ of Imam ‘Ali [a]
Revelation of Qur’anic Verse 5:3
Immediately after the Prophet [s] finished his speech, the following verse of the Qur’an was revealed:
“Today I have perfected your religion and completed my favour upon you, and I was satisfied that Islam be your religion.” (Qur’an 5:3)
The above verse clearly indicates that Islam without clearing up matter of leadership after Prophet [s] was not complete, and completion of religion was due to announcement of the Prophet’s immediate successor.

Hassan b. Thabit’s poetry
Immediately after the Prophet’s speech, Hassan b. Thabit, the Companion and poet of the Messenger of Allah [s], asked for his permission to compose a few verses of poetry about Imam ‘Ali [a] for the audience. The Prophet [s] said: “Say with the blessings of Allah”. Hassan stood up and said: “O’ people of Quraysh. I follow with my words what preceded and witnessed by the Messenger of Allah [s]. He then composed the following verses at the scene:

He calls them, (on) the day of Ghadir, their Prophet
In Khumm so hear (and heed) the Messenger’s call,
He said: “Who is your guide and leader? (mawlakum wa waliyyukum)”
They said, and there was no apparent blindness (clearly):
“Your God, our guide, and you are our leader
And you won’t find from among us, in this, any disobedient,”
He said to him: “Stand up O’ Ali, for I am
pleased to announce you Imam and guide after me (min ba’di imam(an) wa hadiy(an)),
So whomever I was his leader (mawla), then this is his leader (mawla)
So be to him supporters in truth and followers,”
There he prayed: “Allah! Be a friend and guide to his follower
And be, to the one who is Ali’s enemy, an enemy”

Oath of Allegiance
After his speech, the Messenger of Allah [s] asked everybody to give the oath of allegiance to ‘Ali [a] and congratulate him. Among those who did so was ‘Umar b. al-Khattab, who said:

“Well done Ibn Abi Talib! Today you became the Leader (mawla) of all believing men and women.”

Number of Companions in Ghadir Khumm
Allah ordered His Prophet [s] to inform the people of this designation at a time of crowded populous so that all could become the narrators of the tradition, while they exceeded a hundred thousand.

Narrated by Zayd b. Arqam: Abu al-Tufayl said: “I heard it from the Messenger of Allah [s], and there was no one (there) except that he saw him with his eyes and heard him with his ears.”

Revelation of Qur’anic Verse 70:1-3
Some Sunni commentators further report that the first three verses of the chapter of al-Ma’arij (70:1-3) were revealed when a dispute arose after the Prophet [s] reached Madinah. It is recorded that:

On the day of Ghadir the Messenger of Allah summoned the people toward ‘Ali and said: “Ali is the mawla of whom I am mawla.” The news spread quickly all over urban and rural areas. When Harith Ibn Nu’man al-Fahri (or Nadhr Ibn Harith according to another tradition) came to know of it, he rode his camel and came to Madinah and went to the Messenger of Allah [s] and said to him: “You commanded us to testify that there is no deity but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah. We obeyed you. You ordered us to perform the prayers five times a day and we obeyed. You ordered us to observe fasts during the month of Ramadhan and we obeyed. Then you commanded us to offer pilgrimage to Makkah and we obeyed. But you are not satisfied with all this and you raised your cousin by your hand and imposed him upon us as our master by saying `Ali is the mawla of whom I am mawla.’ Is this imposition from Allah or from you?”

The Prophet [s] said : “By Allah who is the only deity! This is from Allah, the Mighty and the Glorious.”

On hearing this Harith turned back and proceeded towards his she-camel saying: “O Allah! If what Muhammad said is correct then fling on us a stone from the sky and subject us to severe pain and torture.” He had not reached his she-camel when Allah, who is above all defects, flung at him a stone which struck him on his head, penetrated his body and passed out through his lower body and left him dead. It was on this occasion that Allah, the exalted, caused to descend the following verses:

“A questioner questioned about the punishment to fall. For the disbelievers there is nothing to avert it, from Allah the Lord of the Ascent.” (70:1-3)

Question: Many believers ask what they should do regarding the commemoration of the martyrdom of the master of the martyrs Imam Al-Hussein (may Allah’s prayers be upon him) and his family
and supporters (peace be upon them), knowing that the authorities insist on avoiding large gatherings especially in closed spaces due to the spreading of the Coronavirus.

Answer: In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate the Merciful There are many ways to express sorrow and grief on this painful occasion while showing sympathy towards the holy Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) and his pure family in that great calamity that befell Islam and Muslims. Here are some examples:

1- Many beneficial Hussein gatherings are broadcasted live on TV stations and on the internet, and religious and cultural centers and institutions should coordinate with good preachers and pioneers in this regard and must mobilize and urge the believers to listen to them and interact with them while they are in their places of residence or similar.

2- Home gatherings held at certain times of the night or day where attendance is restricted to family members and people in contact with them, and some useful Husseini speeches are heard in them, even through what is broadcasted directly on some satellite channels or via the internet. As for public gatherings, they must strictly adhere to health controls, by taking into account the social divergence between those present and the use of medical masks and other means to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus epidemic, with the number of attendees limited to what the relevant authorities allow, which might differ depending on whether it’s held in open or closed places as well as the country.

3- Spreading Ashura appearances on a large scale by raising black flags and banners in the
squares, streets, alleys, and so on from public places, taking into consideration not to violate
the sanctity of private property or others while abiding by the laws in force in the country. It
should include passages from the words of Imam Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) in his great

reformist renaissance, and the masterpieces of poetry and prose that were said in that tragedy. As for the foods that are known to be distributed on this occasion, the necessary health conditions must be taken into account in their preparation and distribution, even if this requires limitation to some dry foods and their delivery to the homes of believers in order to avoid gatherings when distributed. May Allah grant success to everyone for commemorating this important event and offer condolences to the master of the youth of the people of Paradise (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him).

Question:
In the name of God, The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful
Many ‏jurisprudents have issued a Fatwa stating that “observing the moon crescent with the armed eye is not valid for the observer or for others.” Now, for some, the question arises that since the application of the word “observing” mentioned in narrative texts which includes observing with both the naked and armed eye, and the impossibility of observing with the armed eye in the age of the infallibles, does not taint it, what is the nature of this Fatwa, and why we should not trust the observing of the moon crescent with new tools unlike many Sharia issues in which new tools are considered in their diagnosis?

Answer:
This is a specialized discussion, some aspects of which cannot be clarified except for experts, but as far as it is understandable to others, we indicate some points and say that: The Holy Quran implies that “the moon crescent of each month” is set as “the time index” for the general public to rely on in their religious and worldly work. The God Almighty has said: “They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons. Say: They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj”, and what is worthy to be fixed time or place and the index of time for the general public is the moon crescent which is visible to the naked eye in the local horizon of any region; But if this crescent is seen only with a camera, it does not have the validity to be considered as an indicator of time for the general public.
In other words, every month, the crescent of the first night and its position in the following nights is considered as the pointers of the clock, and just as the pointers show different times of day and night with their circular rotation, the different forms of the moon which in consecutive nights, its bright part becomes more and more, and then this bright part decreases from the middle of the month until it reaches the end, is the same and it is considered as a celestial night- counter for the lunar month, and therefore it must be seen in a way that is accessible to the general public and does not require special tools.
Thus, it is clear that distrust in observing with a telescope and similar tools in proving the first day of the month is not due to the disregarding of modern tools in determining the subject of the Sharia decree, but because what is the subject of the Sharia decree is something that its existence must be recognizable to the general public, and anyone with a healthy eye, even villagers and nomads, and mountain dwellers who have no tools other than their eyes to detect a crescent on the horizon, can use it.
In a way, this can be compared to the issue of one of the causes of Janabah, which is the discharge of semen from a man; in the way that in case of surgery and removal of the prostate gland, during intercourse, semen returns to the bladder and comes out of it with the urine, and if the person’s urine is tested, it is determined by laboratory tools that the urine contains some live sperms, but despite this, he will not be required to perform Ghusl; because the reason for the necessity of Ghusl is the discharge of semen, and this is something that has not been realized, and the presence of sperm in the urine that has been given to the laboratory, has no effect on the decree; because the reason for the necessity of Ghusl has not been realized.
Another similar case is when a person leaves his city and become so far away that the residents of the city cannot see him except with a camera and similar tools, and he cannot hear the call to prayer (Adhan) of his city except with instruments that can increase the loudness of the distant sound. However, the Sharia decree on the issue of Had-at-Tarakhus has nothing to do with these tools and equipment, but that person reaches the Had-at-Tarakhus when his fellow citizens can not see him with their normal eyes, and when he cannot hear the call to prayer with his normal ears. Because the subject of the decree on the Qasr prayer and Iftar permission during the holy month of Ramadan is just to become far away from the city as much as above mentioned, not the case of not seeing him and not hearing the call to prayer.
Another similar thing is that if one cleans the fish from the blood in it, and of course it is forbidden to eat it while is pure, then by a magnifier he see very small particles of blood in it that cannot be seen with the naked eye, so according to the Sharia, it is not forbidden to eat that fish because the subject of the decree is on the sanctity of something which in practice is considered as blood; and this is not the case with particles that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Therefore, the above mentioned cases are different from other cases in which new tools may be relied upon in the realization of the subject of the Sharia decree or its fulfillment; examples of the effectiveness of these devices include:
When one doubts about meet the water of a container with impurity and does not find impurity in the water with the naked eye, but when he finds a particle of impurity with practical tools; in this case, the verdict is that the water is unclean; because the subject of the rule of the water impurity is finding even a little bit of impurity, and now he has been able to achieve the smallest detail by a magnifier.
When one looks at something, such as the body of a non-Mahram woman, from a distance with a camera or similar devices; will be guilty; because the subject of sanctity is the gaze, and this gaze is now realized with the instrument.
When a person investigates with the modern means of eavesdropping, then he has committed a forbidden act; because the subject of the sanctity is not listening without tools, but the title of “spying.”
When a pregnant woman’s husband dies and they want to share the deceased’s inheritance among the other heirs after reserving the fetus’ share, if they use a device such as an ultrasound to determine the condition of the fetus, whether they are twins or not or what is the sex of the baby, the result will be considered because this is the subject of the decree, that is, the obligation to exclude the share of carrying from the deceased’s inheritance before division, is based on the fact that the fetus is one or two and whether it is a boy or a girl, and if it can be identified with modern tools, it must be acted upon.
When identifying the father of a baby is found to be in doubt and he or she is tested for DNA genetics and his or her gene is coordinated with one of the individuals, the sentence will be based on it. Because the subject of the decree of filiation of an individual requires that one of man’s consanguinity have given birth to the child, which can be identified with this experiment, and therefore, the decree of filiation will be applied to him/her. Requires that one of man’s consanguinity must have given birth to the child.
As a result, the distinction between the cases in which new visual and or auditory devices and the like can be applied to some of them, and the cases in which these tools should not be considered, depends on the difference in the subject of the Sharia decree, and the jurist has no choice but to adhere to what uses as reasons.
In the case of the moon crescent, most jurists have explained the term “measurements of time for the people” for the crescent in the holy verse, as the crescent is a general tool for measuring time that all people can refer to and organize their livelihood and religion according to it, not as an indicator that only some people can afford to use, and others can’t use it except by referring to those who have the tools to see the crescent.
Thus, it turns out that even if scientists had succeeded in inventing the telescope during the time of the Infallibles, they would not have considered the observing of the moon crescent to be valid; This, of course, does not mean ignoring the help of modern tools and equipment, but it does mean that the crescent has not been designated as an indicator of their time until it appears to the public.
With this in mind, it becomes clear that the aforementioned “observing” in the narrative texts related to fasting and iftar is only a way for the crescent to appear on the horizon of any region, so that it can be seen by the general public and with the naked eye, and no meaning for observing with the camera is understood from it.
Furthermore, if we assume that basis for the beginning of the new month be the appearance of moon crescent on the horizon in such a way that it can be observed, even with the most equipped telescopes and cameras, then it should be mentioned that many fasting, iftar, Hajj, and other acts done by the Prophet (PBUH) and the Imams (A.S), which must be performed on certain days of the month, were not in their true days(times); because those Infallibles(Peace be upon them) in recognizing the first day of the lunar months, had trusted in observing with the naked eye, while they, like many other people of their time, knew that the moon of the first night of the month is hardly visible with the naked eye and could be seen clearly and at high altitude, unless it can be seen the night before with a powerful tool – if any.
How is it that neither he nor the others have been told that when the moon is high and clear for the first time, it should be considered as the second night of the month?!

The Supreme Religious Authority Office called on the Iraqi people to take more precautions and caution, while stressing the need to pay attention to the application of preventive measures.

This came during a statement issued this Saturday morning (13 / Shawwal / 1441 AH) corresponding to (6 June 2020). The statement is as follows:

Dear Iraqis,

In the name of God, The most Compassionate, The most Merciful

In these difficult days, when the number of Corona patients in various parts of Iraq, especially Baghdad, is increasing at an unprecedented rate, we once again invite you to be more careful and we emphasize to take the necessary precautionary measures suggested by the concerned authorities, such as avoiding gathering with others, keeping social distance, using masks and washing and disinfecting your hands.

According to the experts, the strict observance of such measures is effective in preventing the spread of this epidemic and reducing the number of patients, so the observance is very important and necessary and negligence is not permitted in this regard, especially since the country is suffering from the lack of facilities to provide medical care for the increasing number of patients who are being hospitalized every day.

Preventing the spread of this disease by using all potential and facilities in the current situation is the public responsibility of both citizens and officials, and everyone should be aware of this great responsibility and work together to overcome this difficult stage with minimum casualties and consequences.

It is important to note that medical and nursing staff have a great deal to do in treating and caring for their patients, and they and their families suffer so much that few people can understand it. They risk their lives in this way, while the number of infected people among them has increased, so everyone should try to reduce their pain and suffering by insisting on taking preventive measures against the virus so that the number of patients does not double and makes them suffer from additional problems and increases the difficulty of their tasks.

In this way, we respectfully tell them that we are so proud of their hard works, and we appreciate their continuous efforts and great sacrifices in serving the people and performing their religious, national and human duties, and we ask God Almighty to protect them and reward them in the best way and may goodness and health and blessings be upon them. We also ask God Almighty to provide immediate healing for the patients and to remove calamity and disease from everyone as God is the One who most grants and is the Best Hearer.

In The Name of Allah The Beneficent The Merciful
To the office of the Grand Religious Authority his Eminence Al-Sayed Al-Sistani (may Allah prolong his life),
Assalamu ‘alykum wa rahmat’llahi wa barakatuh

Q.1 Does the body of deceased Muslim (due to Coronavirus) need to be washed and purified like other Muslims, or does it suffice to perform tayammum?
What if the authorities do not allow the tayammum to take place, as the medical staff put the body in a special bag with preservatives and prevent us from opening the bag before the burial?

A.1 If it is not possible to wash the body due to fear of infection, then a dry ritual purification (tayammum) can performed instead even if the believer is wearing gloves.
If the authorities do not allow the tayammum to be performed, then the deceased Muslim can be buried without ghusl or tayammum.

Q.2 If it is not possible to embalm him based on his seven mosques with camphor, is there any other alternative to this situation?

A.2 In this case, embalming is no longer required and there is no alternative.

Q.3 Is it obligatory for the deceased to be shrouded (takfīn) with the three dresses? What if the authorities do not allow the bag to be opened so that it could be shrouded in it?

A.3 The body must be shrouded using the three garments, even if it is on top of the bag. But if it is not possible to shroud the body with all three garments then it is enough to shroud it using the ones available, such as the Azar, which covers the entire body.

Q.4 In some non-Muslim countries, the corpse of a deceased person (due to Coronavirus) is cremated (burnt to ashes). Is it permissible to allow cremation of a Muslim’s body or should his family prevent it if they can?

A.4 It is not permissible to cremate the body of a deceased Muslim. His relatives and other family members must prevent that and insist on burying the body according to what is required in the true Sharia.

Q.5 What is the ruling on placing the body in a coffin and burying the coffin in the ground?

A.5 It is permissible, but it is necessary if possible, to place the body on its right side and to turn his face towards the qiblah, as it would be if it was buried without a coffin.

Q.6 Specialists say that the deceased can be buried at the known burial places in the country and there is no need for an exceptional procedure for that in terms of the depth of the grave because the virus relies on the living cells for its survival, and after the death of the infected, the virus lives for a couple of hours but does not have any way to get out of the body and infect anyone else. It is sufficient to take medical precautions in the process of transferring the body of the deceased person and burying him by wearing medical gloves, insulating masks and there is no fear after the burial of transmitting the infection to others. Considering this, what is the ruling on the reluctance to bury the deceased in the public cemeteries in the country – even in a place isolated from other graves, contrary to his will or the will of his relatives?

A.6 It is not permissible to refuse the burial of the body in public cemeteries, and the authorities in charge should facilitate this matter.

You are aware of what people are facing these days due to the Corona virus pandemic. The medical staff, nurses and volunteers in hospitals and clinics, which interacts with those who have this disease or are suspected to have it, are risking their health and may be their life because of what they do. They are exposed to being infected by this disease, what words does Marjiya (religious authority) have for them?

In The Name of Allah The All-Merciful The Beneficent
The responsibility of treating, caring for and helping the ill is Wajib Kifa’ie (collective obligation on those members of the community who are capable of contributing) upon those who are qualified to do so, including medical doctors, nursing staff and others. However, it is the responsibility of the authorities concerned to provide them, all that they need to protect themselves from the dangers of contracting the illness, and there is no excuse for the failure or delay in doing so.
There is no doubt that the work that is being done by these dear individuals, despite all the challenges they face, is a great work, their effort is priceless and it may be as close in importance as fighting side by side in the trenches with the heroes defending the homeland and its people. It is certain that Allah the Almighty appreciates their efforts in this world and will reward them for it in the hereafter. In fact, we plead with Allah for those who have sacrificed their lives in this path that they obtain both the reward and the status of a martyr on the Day of Judgement. And we thank them greatly and express our highest appreciation for their magnificent humanitarian work and ask Allah the Supreme the All-able to protect them, save them and keep away from them all ill. Surely, Allah is the All-Hearing and the most able to answer [our prayer].
